How you need to care for your skin on the plane – 7 ways

care for your skin on the plane

Everyone deserves a vacation and everyone loves to go on one. But, some of us despise the actual part. Especially if it an international travel that requires long hours of airplane travel. The air inside the airplane is dry, recycled and has adverse effects on your skin. No matter how much care you put on your skin before your vacation, the few hours of travel can Have you ever wondered how you get off a plane with your skin looking tired, pale and sad? Well, apart from the care you put in before your journey, you also need to care for your skin on the plane!

One thing to understand is that since the inside of the plane is really dry, it is important to keep yourself and your skin hydrated. Drinking water and keeping yourself moisturized are the key. Before you think about how to care for your skin on the plane, you should know what to do before boarding your flight. Like drinking water, cutting the amount of caffeine you take before or on the flight. After a lot of research and trying for myself, I have finally found the ways in which you can take care of your skin on the plane.

Carry travel-sized skincare products in your carry on

Tips on how to care for your skin on the plane –

Get rid of your makeup –

Everyone wants to look good and there are chances that you might want to wear some good makeup when you travel. But wearing makeup on a long flight – big mistake! The dryness inside the plane can bake your makeup and push it into your pores. That can result in unwanted breakouts, skin irritation and what not. No one wants to land at a new place with a fresh zit! So, clean your makeup before you board that flight. You can always touch it up before landing.

Carry cleansing wipes –

With so many people traveling on a plane every day, it’s not possible for airlines to maintain a high level of hygiene. The number of bacteria lurking inside an airplane is unbelievable which means you should clean your face regularly. (I’d suggest not using the water in the toilets to do so!) That’s where cleaning wipes help you. Choose ones that are rehydrating and not the ones that contain drying ingredients. You need to maintain your skin’s pH levels. Clean regularly on a long flight – every 3-4 hours is a good idea.

Carry products that are hydrating

Say no to water mist –

Using a facial mist gives your skin an instant relief. It gives your skin a boost and makes it look fresh and soft. However, spritzing water or water-based mist on your face during a flight can do more harm than good. Water attracts the moisture from your face and will dry out your skin. Instead, go for oil-based mists that provide hydration and freshness. You could choose mists containing coconut water, aloe vera, or orange peel oil. Mist your face a couple of times after cleaning to keep your skin fresh and clean.

Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize –

There are no points for guessing that the above three tips were leading to this one! Airplanes dry out your skin and if you don’t want it to feel all dry and stretchy throughout the flight, don’t forget to moisturize it well. Trade in your regular moisturizer for a facial oil or an oil-based lotion that makes your skin feel hydrated and relaxed. Use an antioxidant face oil/cream to balance the oxidants produced due to the travel stress.

Never miss the sunscreen –

Whether you get the window seat or the aisle seat, don’t skip the sunscreen just because you are inside. Airplane windows don’t provide protection against UV rays and the last thing you want your skin to suffer from is sun damage! It is always best to carry a higher SPF with you when traveling and you can wear the same one on the plane too. Make sure your sunscreen gets absorbed well and isn’t sticky in texture as that’ll attract undue dust and particles onto your skin.

Moisturizing well is important

Get a hand sanitizer, cream, and a lip balm –

Just like your face, your hands and lips will need some extra care too. A good hand cream will keep your hands from getting super dry or itchy. Carry a lip balm with SPF that’ll not only keep your lips hydrated but keep them safe from sun damage also. Avoid touching your face during the flight and when you have to, sanitize your hands. There are a lot of germs on the plane and you don’t want to transfer them from your hands onto your face.

Mask away –

Masking is a great way to pamper and care for your skin on the plane. So carry your favorite hydrating masks and indulge yourself. During a flight, you have enough time and you can get your sheet mask game on! It’s the perfect way to relax and help your skin too. Just pop a hydrating sheet mask on your face, relaxing eye pads on your eyes! Most sheet masks don’t require rinsing which makes them easy to use on an airplane.

Hydrating masks are a good idea

There you go! Nobody likes to get off an airplane with their skin feeling and looking like a mess and this is the least you can do! It’s easy to care for your skin on the plane if you just take a few things into consideration. All you have to do is take a little effort in providing extra hydration to your skin. Just keep stock of your travel-sized skincare products to take with you! In case you forget anything, you can always find them at the dozen shops at the airport. Even if you don’t want to spend a big buck, you can pick up some samples for yourself! Liked this post? Don’t forget to pin it!

I didn’t even know that skin care on a plane was a thing. I was very young when I traveled last and did not care about any of this. However, now that I’m somewhat older (does 16 count?) traveling is on my bucket list and this is probably the most essential list.

I am LOLing at the face mask! That’s brilliant! I was a Delta Flight Attendant for 5 years and I just imagined myself approaching a passenger wearing a facemask during a beverage service! As a flight attendant I wish I had thought to do this!
