11 healthy habits you need to adopt for a wholesome life

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a choice. A healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean giving up on things you love or enjoy. It just means doing everything in moderation and maintaining a balance. Trying to stay fit shouldn’t involve undoable sacrifices. Instead, just adapting some healthy habits can go a long way in helping you lead good, wholesome life. A life that is free of common ailments like body aches, lack of endurance, and even stress!

There is a notion amongst many that being or trying to be healthy means shedding a few pounds which can be done by crash dieting or a rigorous exercise regimen. On the contrary, being healthy has nothing to do with losing weight. You could be 100 lbs and still unhealthy and you weigh 200lbs and still be leading a healthy lifestyle. Being healthy means keeping your body fit and in good shape. That’s why I have listed some very basic and yet extremely important healthy habits that you should have or should adopt for a healthy life.

Healthy habits to adopt for a healthy life –

Start your day early –

We’ve all heard the quote, “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” Define your own early. It need not be 4 a.m. but it shouldn’t be 10 either! The early hours of the morning are the most peaceful and calming and you can get a lot done if you start your day on time. However, it is also important to get at least 6 hours of sleep every day.

Start positive –

Yesterday is gone. Don’t start your day by thinking of what happened or what didn’t. Think of how you can make the most of today. Clearing your mind off negative thoughts gives you room to think about the more important matters. Sulking over the bygones will not change anything but only give you stress and disturb your mental health.

Start your day early and on a positive note

Don’t skip breakfast –

Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day for a reason. It puts your metabolism on the right track and eating well will do just that. Have a simple breakfast of fruit and cereal if you don’t have time to fix yourself an elaborate meal. A good breakfast will fuel you up and keep you energetic all day. One of the most healthy habits to adopt is to stop skipping breakfast.

Go for a walk –

It’s good to go for a walk outside. The fresh air helps open up your body and mind. And, walking after meals has its own benefits. Even if you exercise and go to the gym regularly, take out time for a simple walk after meals. It is a proven fact that walking after meals aids digestion. It also helps with blood sugar and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Oral and physical hygiene –

It’s a no-brainer but I’ll still mention this. Maintaining a good level of hygiene is very important for physical and mental health. From your teeth and body to your home and car, keep yourself and your surroundings clean. Take time out for yourself for some self-care too. Pay attention to your hair, skin, teeth, and nails. Cleanliness is an important step towards being healthy.

Drink water even if you aren’t thirsty

Drink water –

You might think that most of these healthy habits are so basic and everyone knows about these. But, you’ll be surprised that less than half American adults drink only 4 glasses of water which is too less! Water helps maintain control calories, energizes the muscles, and helps with the bowel movement. In fact, it even helps your skin by preventing wrinkles and dryness!

Exercise –

Indulge in some form of physical activity. Whether you like cycling, dancing, yoga or going to the gym, pick your think and form a routine. Exercising helps keep your bones healthy, burn calories and keep you fit. Any form of physical activity that strains your body a little will benefit both your body and your mind. Physical exercise strengthens your muscles and also helps keep your organs healthy!

Maintain a social life –

There is a life outside of home and work. Meet old friends and make new ones. It is very important to have an active social life for the proper development and functioning of the brain. Meeting and interacting with people and having fun reduces your risk of depression by warding off the feeling of loneliness. Meeting new people also helps you explore, grow and gain a new perspective on things.

Get social and pick up a hobby!

Develop a hobby –

Another one of the healthy habits to develop and sustain is to develop a hobby. Find out what you love doing and take time out for it. Nurturing a hobby will help you stay focused and calm and stimulate your brain. It has been proven scientifically that having a hobby helps reduce stress and anxiety, thereby improving your mental health.

Go offline –

Take time off your phone, laptop, TV. Give social media a break. It’s good to know what is happening around you and in the world but it’s also important to give yourself at least half an hour away from all the electronics and the Internet. Read a book, talk to a friend or just indulge in self-care. Give your eyes and mind some rest at least before hitting the sack.

Be grateful/mindful –

Spend a few minutes before bedtime pondering over the day you had and planning for the next day. Maintain a gratitude journal – write 5 things you were grateful for that day. It helps you sleep better and acts as the best motivation for days you are feeling down. Next, think about what you want to do the next day and plan your day accordingly. It will save a lot of your time in the morning.

So here are what I think are basic healthy habits everyone should adopt to lead a fit and fab life. As much as it is important to maintain healthy habits, it is also important to keep track of your health. Monitoring your heart-rate, keeping an exercise schedule, eating right and knowing what you eat are all important steps towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

    These are great tips! I especially love the maintain a social life because it is SO EASY to just stay home and before you know it it’s been 2 weeks and you have hardly left the house!
